Alpine Rhine Cycle Tour

The Swiss Alpine Rhine connects the Graubünden mountains with Lake Constance. You start in Konstanz by alighting a train to the Alps, to the ancient bishopric town of Chur. An impressive highlight of this area is the Ruin Aulta, or Rhine Canyon, and also the wine villages nestled in the Bünder Herrschaft countryside. You will cycle the entire length of the Principality of Liechtenstein: you can almost see the entire country from tip to tip from your overnight accommodation in Triesenberg. Mediterranean flair and pleasant cycling is what is in store for you along the banks of Lake Constance. Due to the frequent foehn winds, this tour is particularly attractive in October. A certain amount of basic training is required for the Alpine Rhine Cycle Tour.

Day 1
Constance

Individual arrival in Constance/Kreuzlingen

You will begin your trip in Constance, which is the largest town on Lake Constance, and is still quite Medieval in character to this day. In 1414, the town hosted the only church council ever to take place north of the Alps. A small museum is dedicated to the Czech reformer Jan Hus, who was burnt at the stake here. The symbol of the city is the statue of Imperia, which is a memorial to the prostitutes of the council time. The aquariums of the Sea Life Center are also worth a visit.

Day 2
Chur

Constance/Kreuzlingen - Chur, train trip

Enjoy your morning on Lake Constance and then take the train to the place from which you will begin your cycling trip. Chur is recognised as the oldest city in Switzerland and was destroyed by the Magyars and Saracens among others. The Old Town is Baroque in style with the Bishop’s castle and the beautiful town houses. A cable car connects Chur with the resort of Brambrüesch. For those who leave early for Chur, a visit to the Viamala ravine is recommended. Your luggage and bicycles will be transported to Chur and will be available from Midday on.

Day 3
Ruin Aulta

Excursion to Disentis, approx. 60 km

First the train will bring you to Disentis in the Vorder Rhine Valley. The local Benedictine Monastery was probably involved in the Christianisation of this region. You will then follow the Vorder Rhine through the Surselva, Rhaeto-Romanic is the language spoken here. The natural highlight of the trip is the Rhine Canyon, the Ruin Aulta, which was formed through a powerful landslide which occurred some 10,000 years ago. After a tough ascent you will be able to admire the ravine from above or you can take the train, perhaps with a stopover at the remote station of Versam.

Day 4
Triesenberg

Chur - Triesenberg, approx. 45 km

First the route takes you on a relaxing ride along the Rhine and then on through one of the most famous wine-growing areas in Switzerland, the Bünder Herrschaft region. You are rewarded for your efforts in the hilly stretches with beautiful views and excellent wines. A real rarity is the Completer wine, which is grown on only 2 hectares of land and matures for 7 years in larchwood barrels. In the Liechentenstein town of Triesen, the hotel-keeper meets you and takes you up 900 m UP to the hotel! It has fantastic views over the Rhine valley.

Vaduz Castle

Triesenberg - Rorschach, approx. 67 km

Following the Rhine, you cycle through the Principality of Liechtenstein. The pretty capital town of Vaduz has a notable art museum. Freewheeling down lovely roads, you approach Lake Constance, but should make a stop in Hohenems, which is rich in Jewish history and also has an interesting museum, the Stoffels Säge-Mühle Sawmill museum. After cycling through the Rhinedelta nature reserve you arrive in Switzerland and cycle along the banks of the lake to today's destination.

Day 6
Rorschach

Rorschach - Constance/Kreuzlingen, approx. 40 km

You will cycle through the Swiss canton of Thurgau today mainly alongside the lakeshore. This canton is also known as “Cider India” due to its many orchards and its relative remoteness. Enjoy a coffee with a view of the lake in one of the many cafés. You can also avail of an extra night in Rorschach, in combination with an Excursion to the Appenzell Countryside.
