Our hay tour takes you through some beautiful countryside along the Untersee, or Lower Lake, of the western part of Lake Constance. You will see the volcanic landscape of the Hegau hills, Europe´s biggest waterfall and many medieval villages and towns along the way. On this tour you don´t stay in hotels, you get to hit the hay in rural farmhouses along the way. Your evening meal is included in the price. The hay tour is an exciting and economic alternative to your typical bike tour and particularly attractive to families with children.

Day 1
Ermatingen

Individual arrival in Ermatingen

At 5 pm you are awaited at the first hay hotel. When the sun's shining and you can have your evening meal in the great outdoors, you will be able to enjoy a panoramic view of the entire lower lake and the Reichenau Island opposite. If you arrive earlier, we recommend visiting the historical town of Constance or the flower island of Mainau. Your reserved bikes will be ready and waiting for you at the farm.

Day 2

Ermatingen - Eschenz, approx. 25 km

After a hearty farmer's breakfast served almost at your bedside, you cycle off down to the lake and along the banks to Steckborn. Close by is a small castle and museum in which none other than Napoleon III grew up, which you might like to visit. From the castle you get a good view over the lake. A little further up the route is Neuburg, which is the biggest ruined castle in the county of Thurgau. Along the whole cycle path there are lots of lovely places where you can go for a dip in the lake.
The farmyard, run by Mr and Mrs Senn and their family, is home to lots of baby calves, which your children will love!

Day 3
Rhine Falls

Trip to Schaffhausen and the Rhine Falls approx. 35 km + boat trip

After breakfast you set off to Stein am Rhein and its beautifully painted timber-frame houses. In Stein am Rhein you get on to a boat and can enjoy the so-called High Rhine scenery drifting by. Once you have arrived in Schaffhausen it is worth going for a wander around the picturesque old part of the town. And after that - to the Rhine Falls, Central Europe's mightiest waterfall. A boat takes you right up to the rocks in the waterfall giving you a spectacular view of the water crashing down in front of you. You then cycle back Eschenz.

Day 4

Eschenz - Radolfzell - Güttingen, approx. 35 km

Today you cycle to Stein am Rhein again from where you continue along the Lake Constance cycle path over the border to Öhningen and from there to the small Höri peninsula. Cycling through the village of Gaienhofen you soon arrive in the holiday resort of Horn with lovely spots on the riverside for bathing. Later you reach the medieval and former imperial town of Radolfzell. If you have enough time to spare we recommend going for a walk to Mettnau, another small peninsula which is a nature reserve. The last few kilometres of today's section continue to Güttingen, on the outskirts of Radolfzell.

Day 5
Isle of Mainau

Güttingen - Ermatingen, variety of routes from 25 - 40 km

After breakfast you can choose from a number of different route options. You can cycle along Lake Constance's Gnadensee to the Island of Reichenau, which was recently named as a world heritage site and from there by boat to either Ermatingen or Mannenbach. You can also take a detour via Constance, which is definitely worth the effort, and combine this with a visit to Mainau - the flower island.
