Cycling Lake Constance

Along this more athletic cycling tour around Lake Constance you will pass a number of highlights along the way, including the Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen. Like pearls on a string, the longer stages of this route take you past many lovely places to see and visit: Stein am Rhein, Radolfzell, Meersburg, Lindau and Bregenz and Constance itself are the more well known towns around the lake. Providing you have a pretty good basic level of fitness, you will enjoy the beautiful countryside scenes and the route’s fascinating backdrop formed by the Alps.

Day 1
Constance

Individual arrival in Constance/Kreuzlingen

You will begin your trip in Constance, which is the largest town on Lake Constance, and is still quite Medieval in character to this day. In 1414, the town hosted the only church council ever to take place north of the Alps. A small museum is dedicated to the Czech reformer Jan Hus, who was burnt at the stake here. The symbol of the city is the statue of Imperia, which is a memorial to the prostitutes of the council time. The aquariums of the Sea Life Center are also worth a visit, as is the Archaeological Museum.

Today you will cycle away from Constance and through small Swiss fishing villages. Cycling along the shores of Lake Constance you will come to the town of Stein am Rhein with fresco-adorned, medieval houses. Crossing over between Germany and Switzerland numerous times along the route, you will come to the Canton capital town of Schaffhausen, which is towered over by the Munot Fortress. There are over 170 oriels in the town which testify to the former wealth of the citizens.
