Individual arrival in Bregenz

Your cycling trip begins on Austrian soil. The town of Bregenz with its unique lakeshore theatre stage, which you can visit during the day, is located on the shores of Lake Constance.  At the foot of the Pfänder, a 1064 m high mountain, lies the lakeshore promenade and harbour which are perfect for spending a few relaxing hours.  If rental bicycles have been booked, they will be available for collection in your hotel.

Bregenz - Rhine-Delta - Rorschach/Arbon, ca. 33/40 km

Stroll through the city of Bregenz which was founded by the Romans and has a well preserved upper town and a famous lakeshore theatre stage. Near Hard you will cross over the Rhine which flows from the Swiss Alps; the delta where it enters the Lake is an important nature preserve. On Swiss ground, in Altenrhein, you will find the Hundertwasser-Hall, the final construction project of the well-known artist of the same name. Passing through Horn, you will cycle along the lakeshore to the old harbour city of St. Gallen; Rorschach.

Rorschach/Arbon - Constance/Kreuzlingen, ca. 50/30 km

The last day of the cycle route belongs to the Swiss canton of Thurgau, which is well known as an apple growing region. You will cycle through well kept villages along the lakeshore back to Constance. If you wish you may stay an extra night in Rorschach, which you can combine with a trip to the Appenzell region.

Constance/Kreuzlingen - Schaffhausen, ca. 45 km

Today you will cycle away from Constance and through small Swiss fishing villages. Cycling along the shores of Lake Constance you will come to the town of Stein am Rhein with fresco-adorned, medieval houses. Crossing over between Germany and Switzerland numerous times along the route, you will come to the Canton capital town of Schaffhausen, which is towered over by the Munot Fortress. There are over 170 oriels in the town which testify to the former wealth of the citizens.

Schaffhausen - Waldshut, ca. 60 km

The first highlight of the trip after only a few kilometres, is the famous Rhine Falls, which you will be able to get a close look at on a boat trip. The Rheinau monastery is located in a bend of the river, which was once a gathering place for mercenaries from all over Europe. You will pass through Kaiserstuhl, the smallest town in Switzerland, and in Bad Zurzach one of the most modern salt-water baths in Europe awaits you. In Koblenz, where the oldest iron railway bridge is located, you will cross over the Rhine and reach the well-kept, former Further-Austrian town of Waldshut.

Waldshut - Rheinfelden, ca. 40 km

The double town of Laufenburg is worth a visit today, which has even won a prize for its tidiness and well kept buildings. There was also once a waterfall here but it was blown up with dynamite in the 19th century. In Bad Säckingen the longest, covered, wooden bridge in Europe and a strange refuse museum. You will then continue along the northern bank of the river to Beuggen Castle, the former seat of the Order of the Teutonic Knights, and on to Rheinfelden, whose historical centre is located on the Swiss side of the river.

Rheinfelden - Basle, ca. 25 km

Today’s route is only short so that you have enough time to visit the Roman ruins in Kaiseraugst and the first city tour of the trip. Basle, as a diocesan town, has a rich history and an impressive walled medieval old-town. It is the shopping and trading centre in the border triangle of Germany, France and Switzerland and has lots of very interesting museums.

Individual return journey home or extension of your stay

After breakfast your trip along Lake Constance and the Rhine comes to an end and you will return to Bregenz or home. We would however, be more than happy to extend your holiday on the Lake or on the Rhine.
