The Region along the High Rhine has been spared by wars over the past centuries and still sparkles in its original glory. Small medieval towns and the towns of Constance, Basle and Freiburg compliment the impressive landscape of Lake Constance between the foothills of the Black Forest and the Jura Mountains. Experience the famous Rhine Falls, the pastoral Markgräfler Region and the highlight of the trip: the charming cultural metropolis of Basle. This cycling tour along the High-Rhine is also suitable for those not used to cycling.

Day 1

Individual arrival in Constance/Kreuzlingen

You will begin your trip in Constance, which is the largest town on Lake Constance, and is still quite Medieval in character to this day. In 1414, the town hosted the only church council ever to take place north of the Alps. A small museum is dedicated to the Czech reformer Jan Hus, who was burnt at the stake here. The symbol of the city is the statue of Imperia, which is a memorial to the prostitutes of the council time. The aquariums of the Sea Life Center are also worth a visit, as is the Archaeological Museum.

Day 2

Constance/Kreuzlingen - Schaffhausen, ca. 45 km

Today you will cycle away from Constance and through small Swiss fishing villages. Cycling along the shores of Lake Constance you will come to the town of Stein am Rhein with fresco-adorned, medieval houses. Crossing over between Germany and Switzerland numerous times along the route, you will come to the Canton capital town of Schaffhausen, which is towered over by the Munot Fortress. There are over 170 oriels in the town which testify to the former wealth of the citizens.

Day 3
Rhine Waterfall

Schaffhausen - Waldshut, ca. 60 km

The first highlight of the trip after only a few kilometres, is the famous Rhine Falls, which you will be able to get a close look at on a boat trip. The Rheinau monastery is located in a bend of the river, which was once a gathering place for mercenaries from all over Europe. You will pass through Kaiserstuhl, the smallest town in Switzerland, and in Bad Zurzach one of the most modern salt-water baths in Europe awaits you. In Koblenz, where the oldest iron railway bridge is located, you will cross over the Rhine and reach the well-kept, former Further-Austrian town of Waldshut.

Day 4
Schloss Beuggen

Waldshut - Rheinfelden, ca. 40 km

The double town of Laufenburg is worth a visit today, which has even won a prize for its tidiness and well kept buildings. There was also once a waterfall here but it was blown up with dynamite in the 19th century. In Bad Säckingen the longest, covered, wooden bridge in Europe and a strange refuse museum. You will then continue along the northern bank of the river to Beuggen Castle, the former seat of the Order of the Teutonic Knights, and on to Rheinfelden, whose historical centre is located on the Swiss side of the river.

Day 5
Basel

Rheinfelden - Basle, ca. 25 km

Today’s route is only short so that you have enough time to visit the Roman ruins in Kaiseraugst and the first city tour of the trip. Basle, as a diocesan town, has a rich history and an impressive walled medieval old-town. It is the shopping and trading centre in the border triangle of Germany, France and Switzerland and has lots of very interesting museums.

Day 6

Basle - Badenweiler, ca. 40 km

Today you will cycle through Klein-Basel which is located on the right-hand bank of the Rhine on your way towards the Isteiner Klotz. This rock-face was once surrounded by the waters of the Rhine but since the Tulla straightening of the Rhine, it is located away from the River. In the New Stone Age mining was undertaken here and at all times throughout history the rockface was fortified. Soon you will come to the first spa-towns, as healing waters from the Black Forest descend from the mountains and are perfectly suited for thermal baths.

Day 7

Badenweiler - Freiburg, ca. 50 km

The Markgräfler Region is a beautiful pastoral landscape which is renowned for its wine production, in particular with the Gutedel variety. Reserved prosperity and Alemannic serenity abound in the winegrowing villages and towns on the edges of the Black Forest. The Amazon-like Rhine floodplains disappeared over 200 years ago but on the plus side there is also no more Malaria! Freiburg, the capital city of the Breisgau Region, awaits you with a magical old town with the famous small canals and student flair.
